Interview with Gerry Rankin - Global Head - Privacy Risk Management of Anonos BigPrivacy
In preperation of the GDPR+1 Data Privacy Conference wich takes place on the 22nd May 2019 in Esch-sur-Alzette (Luxembourg) we had the opportunity to interview Gerry Rankin, Global Head - Privacy Risk Management of Anonos BigPrivacy.
GDPR+1:
To what extent has data protection influenced your corporate culture?
Anonos set out with the intention of establishing the equilibrium between minimisation of privacy risk and maximisation of data value. In an era where Big Data is at the epicentre of significant corporate change, companies must embrace and leverage the information content of its products and customers to keep pace with digital challengers entering their markets; failing to do so can be catastrophic for business stakeholders and customers. It is not surprising therefore to expect the regulation of data, and its use would follow closely on the heels of advanced application of personal and sensitive data in Data Science, AI and ML use cases. With the full extent of the GDPR ramping-up as Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) mature their understanding and enforcement agenda's, Anonos is prepared to help organisations fulfil their analytical imperatives with the assurances provided by the GDPR certified SaveYourData and BigPrivacy technical safeguards.

What was the biggest challenge for your Company when implementing the GDPR?
Anonos' patented technology continues to evolve in step with the Article 29 Working Party, a.k.a the European Data Privacy Board (EDPB) guidance on GDPR implementation. We proactively engage with DPAs across Europe to anticipate the focal points of GDPR enforcement to confirm how the application of our technology when integrated into organisations' information value chains will continue to provide the protection necessary for compliant data use.

What was the most important lesson you learned in the course of the practical application of the GDPR?
What have we learned? Static data protection and privacy enhancement techniques fail to protect data in the dynamic, decentralised secondary data processing eco-systems that we operate in today. The GDPR provides general requirements and restrictions that will drive privacy respectful processing of data. The initial reaction to the regulation from a Data Science perspective was, "too restrictive", but one year after enactment, with a much better understanding of the information controls, the GDPR actually provides and recommends the safeguards that will enable secondary processing of data beyond anything we have achieved historically. Deployed correctly, GDPR technical safeguards as employed by Anonos' technologies will enable distributed, decentralised data analytics compatible with the cloud and third-party data analytics integration, i.e. the Data Analytical Platforms of the future.
